I started listening AiC at about fou,r five years ago.The first Album I've listened was the unplugged, when I heard it, I don't know What realy happend to me but I was amazed by the performance and how all the songs sound great.The first thing that I realy notice in this Band was LAYNE'S voice, Then i bought all Alice's records videos all that I can find, I was and I am amazed by Layne's voice, you can't understand the sorrow in my heart.A lot of respect for all the guys of the band, but without Layne it's not the same.And i assume that he is now on a better place with peace in his mind and soul,Thanks Layne for all the great music you've given  to us.Now I hope your heart is no longer depleating.

There's nothing I could write that could match the first post I made on here a few months ago about AIC's everchanging affect on my musical life. I will say that regardless of the path Layne eventually walked and regardless of the subject matter so beautifully and woefully stated in each song, I'd like to call everyone's attention to something else. It's well within any interview you can find on the Music Bank or on Youtube.
It's a constant, bright personality, a sense of humor, a friend you'd love to have. You can see it in just about everything Layne did, and that's what I choose to appreciate on this day above anything. So, today will be filled with AIC and Mad Season songs and some of those interviews and definitely a viewing of Unplugged, but let's not lose sight of the joker, the prankster, the rocker in ways that didn't include song on this day as well. It's a very cherished and real thing.

I still can't comprehend just WHAT the HELL "EXACTLY" it is about you Layne.

Sure, your 'voice', 'art', 'personality' -- ALL "GREAT" Things!!!  I've always felt like YOU KNEW your destiny.....maybe not EXACTLY the way things turned out.....but YOU knew Mr. Staley that you would be.....'THE LEGEND'....WAY BACK IN THE DAY....and you just knew.......something..........!!!!!  

However, I don't think you realized just HOW MUCH influence and help you ACTUALLY gave others.  Even your "LOOK"......sometimes, (almost) appears GODLY!!!....And I don't mean to come off like a "FREAK" about that but I don't have many cable channels and I pass by the religious station CONSTANTLY!!!......And, Some of those Jesus pictures remind me of YOU!!!!  

DOES ANYONE ELSE SEE THAT?  Again, I'm not a freak, but I can't help notice how even your facial structure looks the same, of course with the long hair, etc........

Thanks for all the help and continued support.  All I have to do is turn your voice on and I always feel better and comforted..........I believe you're ok now....even smirking at us in your goofy sort of way.....again THANKS!!!

No words are meaningful enough to express all that Layne was and remains to be.  Through his loss there remains an ever present void that will never be filled.  All we can do is gather on the various sites and forums, to come together to share, cherish, and express all that he has meant, and shall always mean, to us all.  

As AIC continues on, I hope they, and all of us, continue to hold Layne's gifts that he left us with, in the highest regard.  It is up to us all to never forget the beautiful soul that is Layne, and to educate those new fans who have yet to realize the impact this man has made, not only on AIC but to the world as a whole.  May we never forget the talent, beauty, humor, and wonderful soul that is Layne Staley.

the first time i saw the man in the box video, i freaked out and said to myself thats the best singer ive ever heard in my life!!!!!!! i had goose bumps, i fell in love and have been his biggest fan since 91, my dogs name is layne,,,,,,,, i remember the facelift tour, opening for van hagar, alice came on the stage and the 15,000 or so idiots started chanting sammy sammy sammy and booing, i flipped out and actually had to slap a few of them around, i would have taken them all on, and ofcourse they blew the van halen crew off the stage like ive never seen,,,,,,,,, theres not one song on mad season or alice that i would says is not awesome, i think he could sing anything and make it unique, you could hear one note of his style and say, thats layne staley, rip brother you will always be #1 in my book

and finally he found, finally he foud repeating in his head... "if i can't be my own, i'd feel better dead"...

I used to hear Alice on the radio back in the 90's.  I'd always say, within my head, God those guys have such great voices and harmony.....but kinda left it at that.  I was too much into my own life to care too much about bands.

BUT, in the last 5 years, I can shit myself for not realizing just how amazing Layne was back then.  NOW, I have bought everything possible.  

Layne's voice is so amazing that no words can describe it well enough.  He can sing anything from hard rock to super mellow music.  His voice is just sooo beautiful.

Love you Layne.  You always help me through life by just listening to you!!!

There are only a few times in ones life that they can honestly say that they've been touched.  Layne did that for me many years ago. I didn't believe that I even had a soul until he reached out with that voice. His pain became the worlds pleasure as we sang those songs at AIC concerts or in our cars or in the deep watches of the night.  I still sometimes imagine that he's not really gone...instead I know that he's off in heaven, healthy and happy and looking down on the world and watching over his bandmates and family...and fans. His legacy will live on...through us...through the eyes of each person he touched while here and each heart that was broken when he passed.  

Thank you AIC for allowing the nation to share...your loss is insurmountable but he's at peace now and it's what we all wanted for our friend.

The only thing I can say on this sad day is thank you, Layne. You made the bad times bearable, you helped heal my heart. I will never forget you for that. Be happy. It's how I imagine you to be.

I remember tuning into the bbc rock show at around 12am and it opened with "Down in a hole" from the unplugged album. I was thinking cool an Alice in Chains tune, aint heard one of them on the show for a while, but why "Down..."? Why not "Dam.." or "Them..." something a bit more "up". It was only when the track stopped that Marrie-Anne Hobbs spoke about Layne's passing. I can honestly say I felt sick to the core. Such a strange feeling, you never expect to feel that way about the death of someone not related or close to you.
6 months later I was in Ballard visiting Uni friends, stayed for a week. Had AIC on the jukebox first night there and brought it all back, that night tuning into the rock show.

I suppose it just reinforced how much this irreplaceable talent had impacted on my life. Unfortunately I never got to see AIC when they toured Scotland, shit I even missed Jerry when he played a club in Glasgow I worked in in 2002!!!

I have been and remain a life long fan of the band, largely down to the man who is no longer here.

RIP Layne, RIP.

We never met, but I feel like I knew you.  Sounds crazy, but I don't know ANYONE else who offered so much of their heart and soul to the fans on a regular basis.  I admire the honesty and the emotion that you shared with me and millions of others throughout your life.  And I know that you were much more than a mere singer and musician.  You were an artist, a poet, a writer, a photographer, a brother, a son, a friend, and a visionary, really.  Your talent and charisma astounds me daily, and you are so irreplacible, it's not even funny.  There will never be another quite like you.

I hope that wherever you are now in spirit, you are well aware of HOW MANY LIVES YOU HAVE TOUCHED AND SAVED.  There's a chance you may never know how comforting and healing your art has been.  I also hope that you are in a better place, the same better place where my mother is now.  She is an amazingly wonderful mother, and she'll be glad to look out for you, if you ever need a mommy up there  :)   What an incredible soul.  I used to read her the funny quotes you've said over the years, and she'd always laugh.

I've been listening to AIC since early 90's and AIC was one of those bands that just catch ur attention on those days (and still)....but i was living in Peru at that time and was and still is so hard to one of these great bands to go south and i was always dreaming to see them live...i saw AIC last year here in DC were i lived now, it was amazing even though i would like Layne to be there in person, they played a video in the middle of the show and was so shocking to see the front man of this band gone, the guy that fits so so so good for all of us who consider generation X. Thanx Layne for everything...we gonna missed u forever..keep the good work duval!!!

Today marks six years since Layne's poor family went to discover his body which had been there for well over a week.  What a loss to the music world!!!  Isn't that how it always goes, the enigmas always leave us far too soon.
The list goes on; Hendrix, Joplin, Morrisson, Cobain, and Staley...
Some things in life are just too big to overcome.  Your music is like H to us.

The 1st time I heard- AIC... "We Die Young" on MTV Headbangers Ball... & I headed right to the music store & bought "Facelift"...  I thought this is a  real band to be reckoned with.  I was blown away by their heavy riffs, boomin' bass & their real ly deep- emotional woes & highs lyrically ("Sea of Sorrow" or "Love/Hate/Love").

The 1st time I saw AIC- @ "The clash of the titans" (Slayer, Megadeth & Anthrax) I had even won tickets on ZRock...Alice came on 1st & I was literally floored by their performance. They all looked amazing (Ah.. Jerry & his long hair) & Layne's powerful melodic voice just so overpowering & so mesmorizing.

Alice will always be one of my favorites bands. They have helped me throughout my life- through the "high" times ...& especially during the "darkest" periods of my life. Each of their albumns ("Facelift, Dirt, Jar, SAP, AIC") are so different & unique...a must have if you don't own it... "SAP" love all the tunes, especially- "Right Turn" w/Chris Cornell & "Am I Inside".

Layne ... when I hear you sing, it captivates me- you reach into the very depths of my sou l! I have always admired you, just to let you know... you were the one that had inspired me to be a singer! I'd always crank up the tunes & pretend to rock out w/you (being a rockin' chic) & all... May you finally find peace & happiness! We all miss you & love you, man!!!

Mad Seaon was another good one...it's obviously different from Alice. Loved the slow bluesy tune  of "Artificial Red" ("Artificial red, smoke- poisoned consumed"...  & "Long Gone Day" ("So much blood, I'm starting to drown, runs from cold to colder"...) & the instrumental "November Hotel". I have the albumn & the VHS tape of Mad Season, too bad they haven't released it on DVD, yet...    

It was along time ago when my girlfriend at the time told me that I had to hear this band that she had gone and heard in Seattle one weekend in 89', she said the music would put me on my ass and that I would really really love it. Her friend Demri had taken her down to meet her new boyfriend (Layne) and his band. They played a couple of their new songs for her while she was there partying with the band and Demri....later that next year MAN IN THE BOX broke huge and the rest was history. I still remember that conversation like it was yesterday and I remember even more vividly Demri's beautiful smile as she proudly talked about her new boyfriend and his band!!!! I hope you have found her again Layne and I hope that the 2 of you are in a more beautiful place together....RIP DEMRI AND LAYNE - you will not be forgotten!!!!!

Music that truly touched my heart and the depths of my soul! Layne I shall miss you more than words can express. The hauntingly torturous melody of your voice, the pain and anguish, a longing for something to bring solace and calm resonate with every fiber of my being. Along with Kurt, never have two individuals brought so much depth to music. I became a chins fan late in the bands years seeing as im only 16 but layne was a phenomenal singer is dark voice along with jerrys grinding guitar just add for a good time. Layne is an insperation to me and i hope he is in a better place rockin out with the great musicians that have passes us by. As the day his body was found appraoches the memory of layne gets stromger in us all layne you are hugley issed and i wish i could have become a chains fan sooner so i could have enjoyed you more

I have been deeply saddened by the death of Layne!  I really have been disturbed by the way he died and feel much sadness for what he must have been going through!  Yes, you can say he knew what he was doing, but I don't believe he did and I feel sad for his last few days of loneliness and despair!  Please give the band a break and don't dis them for moving on!  Be kind and enjoy the music that is Alice in Chains!!

I'll never forget the first time I saw AIC.  It was here in Tulsa and the band was opening for Ozzy with Blind Melon and Layne came out in that wheelchair and sang his ass off.  What a great show.  Layne has been such an inspiration to me and in some ways helped save my life.  I will never forget Layne Staley or AIC and I can't wait until you guys go back on tour and hopefully come back to Tulsa.  

Layne and jerry saved my life i was going to kill myself....and when he died it seemed more hopeless but the songs like social parasite and nutshell saved me so.....Thanks ill always be a fan-jesse

I think of Layne every single day of my life.  I've never, ever,Ever, EVER..had Anyone affect me like he has.  

I can't explain it.  Sure... Layne was Godly gorgeous but I don't think of him like that.  I just feel this special closeness that I (again)...can't explain.  He's helped me thru many things in which I am EXtremely Grateful to him.

I love him (i guess) like a super best friend in a bonding spiritual world from the past.

The first time I saw Chains was when they opened up for Van Halen at Hirsch Coliseum In Shreveport LA. back in 92'. Layne came out on stage and wailed his ass off. About two thirds of the way through, during "Love Hate Love", one dumbass Van Halen fan grabbed Layne by his foot and pulled him down to the floor of the stage. Layne then jumped to his feet and said to the audience, " SHREVEPORT!  HEY SHREVEPORT!! I LOVE ALL YOU MOTHER FUCKERS!!  ALL YOU MOTHER FUCKERS ARE GREAT!!  EXCEPT FOR THAT MOTHER FUCKER!!!" As Layne pointed to the dude who pulled him down, the croud had already started beating him senseless. If it wasn`t for the security guards, we probably would have killed that dude.  By the way,  Chains blew Van halen off the stage. My ears are still ringing!

I remember when Layne broke his leg sometime before or during the 'Dirt' tour. He rolls out in a wheel chair and the band breaks into 'Angry Chair' .... that was classic. Layne lives!!! Everytime we play his songs :)

Layne I will always hold you in my heart, you helped me in more ways than you will ever know....addicted to drugs and down in a hole like you were, I see your pain and know your path similar to mine, I think of you always and love you to death....I am glad you dont have to suffer this cruel dope sick world anymore. Yesterday I bought the aic mtv unplugged concert on dvd and watched it last night.  I had it on vhs for a long time but wore it out.  Anyway, watching the concert it was hard to see layne at times because he has since passed away.  But also just to see how fucked up he seemed to be.  Something that got my attention was the lipstick he had on his right cheek right next to his ear.  It just got me thinkin that people obviously cared about him and it wasnt enough for him to get better.  His voice was great and he seemed like a cool guy.  Watching him sing sludge factory on that dvd always gives me chills.  I get so into that song.  I can only imagine what it was like for layne after that concert to the years leading up to his death.  I am sure it was hard for the other guys in the band as well to watch a friend waste away.  Anyway,  I love aic.  To me they are the greatest band of my generation and in my top 3 of all time.  Later

I first became interested in AIC when Dirt was released;  the vocals are what really caught my attention.  Layne's haunting melodies were different from anything I had heard before and certainly stood out from his fellow Seattle musicians.

I later bought Sap, as I am a huge fan of acoustic sound and this album's cameos make it a can't miss EP.  When they did "Would" and put it on the Singles Soundtrack (which is one of the absolute best film soundtracks of all time) I was hooked.  It is my opinion that the Alice In Chains performance on MTV Unplugged is among the top 3 performances of all time; the others being Nirvana and Eric Clapton.  The sound that came from that show is disturbingly good.  If you want to truly experience that performance, light a bunch of candles all around the room, put on the DVD, play it loud with a beer or glass of wine!!

I cannot imagine how hard it has been for Jerry and the guys to cope after losing Layne.  Their sound was so unique and it can never really be the same with the new guy but I feel that Layne would have wanted them to continue.  It's so sad that someone as talented as he was could get lost in drugs to the point of no return.  Listen to "Bee Girl" on Disc 2 of Pearl Jam's Lost Dogs CD and you'll hear his tribute to Layne.  Great melody, great song and a perfect way to remember Layne.  Sometimes I hear that song and get a lump in my throat as I'm saddened to think of what his last moments must have been like.

There will never be another Layne Staley!!!  RIP

I love you too Layne Staley. You have that one of a kind voice. So talented, so young and so fine. GOD! I love you. I Love your Beautiful Gorgeous face. You know Layne. I still cry today every time I watch your music videos. And I still cannot take my eyes off of that Gorgeous face of Layne Staley. How can one not feel so warm and mellow listening to Alice In Chains? When I hear Layne Staley sing & when Jerry Cantrell sing's with Layne, I can feel their voices go all through my body. And yeah. It does feel GOOD! Like getting high without the drug! I missed you then Layne, I still miss you today. I will miss you Layne forever. I LOVE YOU LAYNE. And that's forever! Maybe one day I just might get my wish. And that has always been to meet you Layne. We'll all be together one day....  I've been a fan of Alice In Chains from the very begining...

AIC blew me away from the first time I heard them as a teen.  The heavy riffs with the vocal harmonizations, every record every song was top notch no filler awesomeness.  I consider AIC one of the greatest bands in rock history.  It hurts me to think you could continue as AIC without Layne and especially write new material and call it AIC.  I will always cherish what will now be known as the Layne years.  I have no interest in any new material now and will not support the band in its latest incarnation.  Sure you can say he was only on piece of the band but IMO he was the most important piece.  One thing I will NEVER NEVER understand is how a man who was so loved by so many was just left alone in his world of shit to die.  I don't know how his family and friends can live with themselves knowing it was happening.  So now there is a rehab program in his name, hopefully it will help people in similar situations, but the effort should have been made to help Layne.  NO EXCUSES needed by anyone now because it is too late.  I'm sure this has all been said before.  Please don't delete the comments of the dissidents.

ero piccolissima quando ho sentito per la prima volta la sua voce. ora ho 23 anni e la sua voce è ancora accanto e dentro di me.
quando il telegiornale qui in Italia ha dato la notizia della sua morte non volevo crederci, speravo avesse pronunciato il nome di qualcun altro. poi invece ho capito che si trattava proprio di lui e sono scoppiata a piangere.
sono di Roma e vivo tuttora a Roma ma non credo esistano distanze quando ci si stringe nel dolore!
mi manca tantissimo anche se non l'ho mai conosciuto.
può sembrare strano e stupido ma credo che ognuno di noi abbia amato davvero Layne come ho fatto io!

To me Layne was the greatest front man to ever walk upon the stage or get behind a microphone. Your lyrics made me feel as if you were talking to me. I finally found someone else who felt as I did.
