No one rolls out the welcome mat quite like Manchester. We arrived in town sometime around 3:00 A.M., and as we were circling the block trying to find our hotel, scores of middle aged dudes dressed up as women were piling out of a bar. Short skirts, fishnet stockings, long flowing hair, and big fat adam’s apples. A couple of them were even yelling at us to stop. Thank God our bus driver only listens to the GPS unit and not guys in skirts.
Considering that I was wearing a kilt 48 hours ago I guess I shouldn’t be judging, but that’s how our Manchester experience began.
Things got worse, as Sean’s cold continued to torment him, and Jerry began to suffer from back spasms.
Things weren’t looking too good for a while, and I was starting to think we were going to have to roll them out on stage in hospital beds, but they both powered through the day and made it up on stage on their own.
Jerry’s guitar rig decided at the last minute to imitate his back and conked out right before show time, which delayed things about 20 minutes.
The show finally went on though, and it was another stellar one, and the crowd was just as great as the previous two nights.
Despite not being able to bang his head or run around, Jerry still managed to work the whole stage, and I don’t think anyone even noticed that his spine was ready to fall out of his torso.
Not that you’d know it by the way most of them behave, but there’s a lot of responsibility in being a rock star.
Most people with bad colds or back spasms would call in to work and take a day or two off. Usually someone could fill their shift or a substitute would be called, or maybe the work would just go undone for the day.
But when one of us “regular” folks calls in sick to work, 3,000 people aren’t left standing around our desk pissed off and wanting their money back, and Steve from the temp agency probably doesn’t know how to play Angry Chair anyway.
So the pressure is on for the guys to take the stage even if they’re feeling under the weather, and Blondezilla & Nosering both stepped up tonight.
I’m so proud. (I still don’t want Sean coming near me though)
Thank you. Extremely educational posting.
