Three & a half years ago I wrote about the experience of traveling by bus in Europe.
Time and technology bring about improvements in many facets of everyday life, but apparently not in tour buses. All the amenities are there, and it’s actually very comfortable and spacious, but sleeping on it is a whole different thing.
Covered wagons in the old American west probably had better shocks.
If we hit a pebble in the road it feels like running over a bowling ball.
Every little bump, every little pothole, feels massive.
So what do big bumps and potholes feel like? Well, they don’t feel like a good night’s sleep, I can tell you that.
First of all, it’s not normal for your bed to be moving at 70 miles per hour, and secondly, it’s not easy to sleep when it feels like you’re rolling over a speed bump every other minute.
The bottom line is that no one in this band gets a good night’s sleep on the bus.
Therefore, the guys often catch up on sleep in the hotels during the day of a show or on days off.
Wherever they’re doing it, the band is getting enough rest to keep putting on great shows, as evidenced by the two sold out nights at London’s HMV Forum.
I can’t say enough about the fans at these shows so far. The passion they have for Alice In Chains is unmistakable, and as I’ve written before, that passion and energy is felt by the band and always boosts up their energy level as well.
The new songs continue to go over really well also.
On the night of the second show, the guys played Last Of My Kind for the first time ever, and the response was great.
The new songs fit in seamlessly right alongside the classic stuff, and the set list is always a great display of the range of this band’s talent.
So, to summarize things so far:
Band – Awesome
Fans – Amazing
Bus – ehhh
Sleep – Yes, please.
The London shows were great, and the band will be back one more time in December for a final asskicking before we head back home to the States.
Hi. Living in Norway I haven’t had the opportunity to see you guys live yet, bot I still try to follow your tour as best I can! Have been reading about Jerry’s bad back and Sean’s cold…. How are they doing? It wasn’t mentioned here…. Are they any better? Sean’s eyes looks “humid” and sick at the photos. I hope it’s not the “pig-flu”! I wish you all the best, and hope to see you all one day…..
Love Synnøve
Hi AiC…I saw you on Monday, finally after 12 years of adoring you guys! I first heard your music as a 14 year old, and 12 years later i cannot express how much you guys mean tome! You new album is truly amazing…I love every single track. And thank you SOOOO MUCH for coming to London, PLEASE come again, i want to see you again! Love you Jerry! XXXX
Hi I have been a fan since 91….and your Monday was the first AIC live show I have managed to go to. Monday show was a tribute to everyone who has lived and passed through these years.
Despite the strong sonic similarity between William and Layne, William is a true addition to the band. Many fans feared he would ‘replace’ Layne…and so did I….. but William is simply his own and he seem to have started a new page of Alice In Chains book. His stage persona is totally different from Layne. As a whole you made Monday night the best gig I have been to. Jerry you had a little smirk on which made me think you were happy with the audience response and that was heart warming to see.
Keep on being yourselves!
Til the next show: Au Revoir!
I was there on Monday 16th, right in front of Jerry - he smiled at me throughout the show - probably ’cause he threw a couple of picks at me and I kept dropping them
I’ve loved their music since I was a teenager and it was a dream realised to see them. And if William needs propping up again during a visit to the crowd - you know who to ask
Really enjoyed the monday show as I took my lady to see you guys.
I loved every song new and old, and Black Gives Way to Blue has been on my stereo non-stop.
One image that will stay with me for the rest of my life was during the acoustic Black Gives Way to Blue. The footage of Layne at the end got me all choked up and the crowds response was definitely a moment, however it wasn’t that. It was Sean!
It was amazing to see a true rock legend with drummers arms, cool sleevless t-shirt, long hair and complimentary ciggie hanging from his mouth……. playing a solo on a xylophone!
Loved the songs, love the band, love new music again.
Thanks AIC,
Alex
I saw you guys on Tuesday night … & was blown away.
I’ve been a fan since ‘Dirt’, but never got a chance to see you.
William was brilliant. I love his style and he has an amazing voice.
Jerry … you’re the shit, man. You kick ass. A true grunge god.
I loved the cool images in the background too. My only regret is that i didn’t see the Layne parts (I was too busy looking at how you were playing ‘Black Gives Way To Blue’).
Thanks for a truly memorable gig.
Please come back to England … maybe play the Reading festival.
I MISS YOU ALREADY!!! It feels cosy to know you’re in Europe, I never want you to go home! =)
ALICE IN CHAINS FOR FUCKING EVER!!!!!
To put it simply It was SPECIAL.Been along time since I saw the band (91).I was like a 41 year old kid in my ‘grandad’ seat on the front row upstairs.Great set, the band look genuinely pleased to be there and the songs that weren’t played show the incredible back catalogue that this special band has.Had a lump in my throat many a time during the set and a tear in my eye from time to time.
Hope to see you again soon
jon
Two GREAT shows in London! This was really a dream come true for me, and I’m forever grateful. Traveling over from Norway with my mate was well worth it, and if I had the money, I would have followed you trough Europe. Sadly, that can’t be done, but hopefully you’ll be back soon
I love the new stuff, and “Last of my kind” is my favorite. William really shines there! He and Jerry should write more together. He also deserves a special mentioning for his performance. I loved Layne, but William has added a whole lot to the band, and the future looks great. Really great!
Thanks for two unforgettable evenings!
Guys - first time I saw you was supporting Megadeth in May ‘90 at Hammersmith, Can’t believe it’s 19 years !
Awesome show on Tuesday - so great to see you playing again, and still writing music that stands head and shoulders above everything else. William - awesome singing, great guitar, especially on Brother !
Not sure if this is allowed, but please check out my photos of the Tuesday show at Flickr - search ‘people’ for JimJamAATG.
Welcome back guys - it’s been far too long.
D’oh, I meant Right Turn ! It’s late !
I am SO EXCITED that Alice in Chains is coming to Chicago in March 2010. I’ll be there! I’m researching rock music for a new music education text. I’ve had to learn about rock from 1980’s forward to the present. AiC has become a musical “totem” for me. LOVE the new album.
I hope you all take care of your health and continue to have a miraculous tour!!
Wish AIC would play a show here in Hawaii sometime in the future. My friend Emow Ridley [former lead guitarist for Strong Arm Down in L.A.] met Jerry once.
When he’s in town I always offer up my Marshall & Flying V for his shows. Really like the tracks on Black Gives Way to Blue, would love to see you do it live here.
Aloha from Kailua,HI
Greg
March cannot get here fast enough.AIC in AC.then next nite in philly.Gonna be a good weekend.Hello to all the people on the otherside of the pond.Your comments about the shows have been great to read.Ive been waitin for this along time too.Seen them a bunch of times in the early days and Jerry solo tours as well.William knows how to bring it and does it with passion/respect.Keep it going guys see you in march.Hey Mke Inez whats goin on with our Raiders
AIC you absolutely rocked @ Forum on Tues. It was soooooooooo good to finally see you. Have grown up listening to you and absolutely gutted that i never saw you before. The audience reaction said it all, a standing ovation and the warmest welcome i have seen in a long time. You were all fantastic, Gerry, you looked truly warmed by our reaction + Mike, think you were smiling all night long. The sound was fantastic and the way the new songs sat side by side with your history says it all. i shed a tear through a few emotional tunes but mainly lost my voice singing along. it was an awesome night and your current album leaves me excited about the future. pls come back soon. William your voice sounded great, really fits well both solo and with Gerry and Last of my kind was brilliant. thank you for returning and making so many ppl happy. So many bands reform and get it SO wrong, being there on Tues was like you’d never left in some ways. IT was heavy
