Yo Rif, on the Opeth board yesterday in the "Fun Facts About Opeth" thread someone posted that "Opeth music once killed a bird or something". haha So what does death smoke look like? Also, there is a String tribute to Opeth coming out this coming Tuesday. I'm curious to this, as I have a few other string tributes and while I don't listen to them very often, they are pretty cool imo.

It was something like this. Bird -> puff of brownish-gray smoke -> lifeless carcass falls to ground. There weren't even really any feathers in the puff. They either incinerated, or just melted to the body. And it wasn't even Opeth, it was "Day 12" by Ayreon, which features Akerfeldt in grunt mode. The song goes, "You let her DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE!" And just as he said "DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE!" is when it happened, which made it even more metal. What I didn't mention, is that I was about to cross a tiny bridge which is the only way to get to Strathmere beach, and the ordeal caused a power outage, which shut the bridge down for like a half an hour.

So I was perusing the Wikipedia pages about Opeth, and I noticed that all of Opeth's albums from Morningrise to Blackwater Park are
considered to be their magnum opus according to the articles. All four
of those album's pages on Wikipedia say something like "both fans and
critics alike consider this album to be the band's magnum opus." Not
only that, but the Ghost Reveries page calls Peter Lindgren a
magnum opus. I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure an artist can only
have one magnum opus, and I'm one hundred percent positive that a
person cannot be a magnum opus. Even if a one of the band members could
be a magnum opus, it would be Mikael, but it still just don't make no
sense. Probably most of you folks have already chimed in on this,
but I'd like to get a good idea of what everybody thinks is Opeth's
magnum opus. I only have Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park, so I can't really say, but I love them both. I'm probably going to get Still Life next. So any opinions?

I'd say that is their "magnum opi" era. But yeah, Wikipedia isn't exactly the #1 authority on everything, since anyone can edit it. But also, it just says that many fans and critics consider [insert album title] their magnum opus, which I guess can be taken to mean that all four are so good, that it has yet to be definitively determined which singular album can be considered the band's true magnum opus. And yes, a "person" is generally NOT a magnum opus. Magnum opus refers to a work, not the contributor to the work. Also, I don't think it's possible to raise a work to the status of "magnum opus" until after the artist has completely finished producing work (e.g. after his dies, retires, etc.).

Rifugium: "The old Opeth is dead. They were great. The new Opeth is still really good, though."
Although he didn't write that much material, I think the absence of Peter has something to do with this. Peter was part of the old Opeth and with him and Lopez missing, you can only wonder what they would bring to new albums. Whatever, the new Opeth is still good. Different though. Opeth is still great live though. I thought that they were better than Dream Theater by far when I saw them last May. At most they'll play 2 new songs live and still have room for 7 or so classics. They're not like a band that plays only new songs and only 1 or 2 older songs live.

Sludge:what's up w/ the would cover?
It's currently unknown if and when it will be released. I guess Mike wasn't to pleased with how it turned out. I hope it does get released, as I really want to listen to it.
