Ok, you're not going to like this.

Sean Kinney is a very average, solid drummer.

Compared to many other drummers, he ALMOST NEVER FILLS.

I've actually noticed how straightforward of a drummer he is.....solid beat, but no dynamic fills where they could be.

He does hit with some power (Junkhead) and he seems to be a great guy, but as drummers go, he's pretty standard.

If he's your hero, tell me where to look for his moments.

    Re: Sean Kinney

Im afraid i have to agree, Sean Kinney is probably slightly under par for the course as a drummer. He has done weird time signitures of Them Bones and Rain When I Die, which says a lot for him, and also slightly jazz style drumming in Angry Chair (listen to the symbols), but compared to Dave Grohl, he doesn't have the same power. If you dont believe me, listen to 'Radio Friendly Unit Shifter' from In Utero. You may not like the song, but the drumming is incredible. Remember, this isn't about the quality of the band, but the drummming!

    Re: Sean Kinney

I love Sean because he doesn't have to be Neil Peart to be good... AIC doesn't need a drummer like that... Sean is always in the pocket, always playing just what the song needs.  I love his work with the bell ride, and drumming his parts in the car has helped my syncopation ;)

Hard hitting and friendly to boot, Sean Kinney kicks ass \m/

    thesludgefactory:

i thought i should make a topic for a very under appreciated drummer.

Does anyone else think he is an incredible drummer? I mean he is not the best drummer to walk on this earth, definately not, but his overal style to his drumming is just amazing. personally i think he is the most unique drummer i have ever heard. there are alot of good, great, amazing drummers out there but it seems that alot of drummers, whether they are bad or amazing, all sound very similar. their just setting the tempo to the song. and alot of drummers in rock bands all do the same things also. but sean kinney is just completely unique. instead of doing crazy fast rolls around the whole kit he jsut selectively hits a few toms or one snare t get it done. like his drumming in angry chair, that alone just makes the drums feel like the major part of the song and not just a background. and of course same goes for no excuses. even his drumming in would is very unique. but i think his best drumming was in their third album. head creaps has an incredible beat to it that no ther drummer even would try. and the ending of shame in you has some simple yet sick drumming. like i said, by no means is he the best, and im sure there are plenty of drummers that can play his songs on the drums, but there is no other drummer that his style, which makes him my favorite drummer. i think he deserves a hell of a lot more attention as a drummer then many other drummers.

Yes, absolutely I agree...that was one of the first songs that came to mind when I thought of Sean's drumming.

Although I do not think that Sean is the best drummer that I've ever heard, he is definitely an integral member of AiC.

If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead.

Niiicce HUGE pix of Sean Tesla.....beautiful.

Whether ya know anything about playing drums or not; Sean just 'brings it' when he plays.  And whether we're only suppose to care about 'just the music' or not; Sean's personality goes right into those drums b/4, during & after his playing which adds way more than a lot of drummers.

yea i know hes not the best. i said that. he is definately in no way the best drummer or even one of the best. i just siad he is a very unique drummer. he mkaes the drumming sound different, he doesnt sound like every other drummer.  and thats why i like him. and i GUARENTEE you he can drum like dave grohl or any good drummer any day, thats just not his style for aic. i highly doubt what he plays is his best ability.

    Re: Sean Kinney

The intro to 'No Excuses' actually drives me crazy and that is my least favorite Alice in Chains song, coincidentally.  See the "Least Favorite Alice in Chains songs" thread, I said it a few weeks ago.

If I say something negative, I always try to say something positive.

I believe Sean Kinney wrote "So Close", and that is actually one of my favorite AIC songs.

"and thats why i like him. and i GUARENTEE you he can drum like dave grohl"

---this I actually agree with.  I've seen some live concert footage and he does actually seem to occasionally take on a Dave Grohl style.

    Re: Sean Kinney

If you think about it, many AIC songs have a pretty low tempo, which makes hard drumming like Dave Grohl not really an option.

I used to like Nirvana, but they have so little material, it's retarded to even bother with them anymore.
