Coma:Hey Rif, have you listened to Daylight Dies at all?
No, but they've been on my wishlist for a while. I probably should have bought an album on my last haul, because I've really been in an epic doom mood lately. And I still stand by my "Pot" statement. Other than one of the filler tracks, I can't name one Tool song that's worse than that. Not that they have many bad ones, but I just can't stand "The Pot." Vocals + lyrics = lose.

You should check out Dismantling Devotion, it's a great album. No Reply is also good, but I prefer Dismantling. They have a new cd coming out the end of June, which I'm really excited for. I just wish I would be able to see them with Candlemass, but the closest date is the night of the Opeth show.

Yeah I really wanted to hit that tour up but A) I don't drive and it would be hard to find anyone to drive to NY that would want to see them and B) Opeth is playing the same night. It seems to be a really short tour, only hitting really select cities, as it's only a 17 date tour.

I like Sober, but it is overrated and overplayed. Good live though. Schism however, I'm so tired of. I liked it when it first came out back in 2001, but they haven't taken it out of their setlist since. So many better songs on Lateralus. At least last tour they sped part of it up.

Re: The Rifugium Chronicles: a thread for open-minded music listeners.
Concert #178 unexpectedly happened tonight. And by unexpectedly, I mean, I decided to go to this show just a day or two ago. Mainly because I didn't even know it was happening.
Anyway tonight's event was the legendary Ornette Coleman. When I read about this show, I knew I had to go. The place: Town Hall, NYC. The good thing about this venue is that it's right next door to my favorite Pub in NYC, the Heartland Brewery. So after a medium steak and a few quality home-brewed frothy beverages, I headed next door and got settled in. The band came out promptly, and then Mr. Coleman himself shuffled his way into the foreground. So is he a has-been? I wouldn't say that...but yes and no. The guy isn't exactly as spry as he used to be, he almost seemed like he didn't know where he was. But when he picked up that horn, it was obvious that his fingers and his lungs are still in primo condition. I wasn't overly impressed by the band, with the exception of the drummer, Ornette's son, Denardo. The remainder of the quartet were two bassists, one electric, and one upright. They were good, but not as tight as any given classic ensemble from the 50s and 60s, and to be honest they didn't seem too well-rehearsed. The Colemans were the obvious stars of the show, and gave the only truly memorable performances. So was it a great show? Well, all things considered--primarily the fact that Ornette is old enough to be my grandfather--yes, I'd say it was very good to great. A good mix of slower songs, and free form stylings that he pioneered back in the day. There was nothing too outrageous, ie no bombastic 30-minute jam sessions, but overall, the set was quite satisfactory. I walked out with a smile, so it was successful in my book. And it was a nice early show, with no intermission and a one-song encore, so I got to go home early. Also, I got to catch the double-decker express train for the first time ever. Man, that thing is sweet. In the end, I'm really glad to have added this to my concert experiences. All the old jazz greats are aging and dying one by one. Most people don't realize it, but we're witnessing the very end of one of the greatest eras of music the world will ever see. And I'll do anything I can do to witness it live before it fades out forever.

I don't write professionally, though at the rate people keep asking me that, I'm starting to think I should. Also, regarding the Ornette Coleman quartet, I just found out that one of the bassists was Greg Cohen, who has played with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, and John Zorn. So that's cool. Again, he and the other guy were both good, just not as in sync as some of the other jazz combos I've seen/heard.

Nice review, as always. Mine are usually as simple as it was fucking awesome, alright, or shitty.

Seconded, I don't know how you do it Shrimpy, making such lengthy reviews without repeating yourself. Especially with something as subjective as music, it has to be torture coming up with new approaches on reviewing music.

Re: The Rifugium Chronicles: a thread for open-minded music listeners.
I got to see yet another living legend tonight, when the great Leo Kottke came to the Sellersville Theater (slowly becoming one of my favorite venues). I was actually unprepared for this show, as it "sold out" before I knew it was even happening. But I figured maybe I'd be able to snag an extra from someone. Either way, knowing the awesome Washington House restaurant is right next door, I figured, if I couldn't get in, I could at least get some good grub and great beer, which they have in abundance. They have awesome steaks and seafood there, and for being pretty much in the middle of nowhere, the beer selection is phenomenal. So I got there nice and early for some indulgence, then headed next door to try to get myself a ticket.
Well, it turns out that "sold out" at this venue in fact means "entire row of seats up front still available." ZOMG So I bought my ticket 30 minutes before the show, and got a better seat than most people. Not to mention I had the whole row to myself. Not that I needed it...I'm not that fat. Anyway, on to the show. Kotte was awesome. If I could play like him, I'd want for nothing. It was just him, solo on the stage with a 6-string and a 12-string. He's one of those guys that can just play the guitar so effortlessly. Which makes me sick in a way, but only because I'll never be that good. Aside from his skill with the strings, he also has a wry, dry wit that was hilarious and often nonsensical. It was cool. Like hanging out with a long-lost uncle who has dozens of life experience stories to tell....and can also play an acoustic guitar better than most people in the world. It would have been a more perfect show if it was just a little bit longer, even if that meant him rambling on with more nostalgic banter. But on the other hand, the show started at 7:30 and got done just before 9:30, and he was the only performer, so it was good old-man-show timing for tired/drunk old me.
So that's about it for show #179. Nothing outrageous. Just good times, good food/drink, and good music.
