    Roller Derby

Okay, so it's not in a ring, or an octagon. It is however a contact sport and I love it, so if anyone wants to talk about it, this is the thread to do it in.

There are two types, one version you can play on a banked track and the other is on a flat track.

And if we change, well I love you anyway.

    LOL
you and my daughter should get together.....she went to a game/match (?) and afterwards talked with the girls.....she now plans on honing her skating skilz and joining the Brewcity Bruisers when she turns 21

when i voiced my concern about her being small and getting her pretty face rearragned her only response was 'mom, think about it.....it's so ME!'

    i don't have any gray hair......yet

I can't even believe you can do this as an organized event!  Don't think it is even an option for me here in BFE, but I had dreams about this as a girl.  I love to inline skate, but I am probably too small and mellow anyway.

    Re: Roller Derby

I am telling you, getting involved in this sport is like being in the most amazing sisterhood. On the league that I play on there are so many different types of girls and I am not just talking about body types...

Each league has it's own style, for instance the Austin league has a penalty wheel and play on a banked track, whereas the Hamilton league have penalties like hockey where you sit in "the box" and play on a flat track. Also, some are more like wrestling (some choreographed) and not so much focus on the sport and athletics.

If your daughter is interested in learning more get her to check out the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, you can start playing at the age of 18 as you need to be insured.

You won't get gray from it, it'll be the best thing you ever witnessed - I swear!

    Re: Roller Derby

You could still get involved, there is a vast age range on the league that I am involved in, hell you could get some skates and ref if you wanted to! I mean, I'm kicking on 30 and am in love with it...

    <----- Yep, that's me!

I'm no longer on this team (DVAS), I moved to another team on the league called "Smoke City Betties", actually it's the team am playing against in this photo Yes

Everything about it is fun: the practices, the bouts, the fundraisers, the bruises, the crowd!!

Found out if there is a league near you and check out a game.

I will have to do that.  I would love to try it.  I use to be pretty good on a pair of old fashioned roller skates back in the day.  But being that I am days away from turning 30 bones might break now

Meh, just drink more milk Wink

My 30 year old body hasn't been broken, pretty bruised; though, not broken. I love the fact that we do this on old school quad skates.

    Inlines Ick!

Yeah I am not a fan of inlines.  Maybe it's because I am not cordinated enough to stand up on them straight let alone skate on them.

I would love it because I would take all my frustrations about my husband out on the rink.  That would be pretty bad ass.

    deadly viper assasin....lol....i luv it!

my daughter had talked with the girls after the games and they encougaed
her to join but i guess around here there is no 'junior' league so she has
    to wait til she's 21
the brewcity bruisers are division three ~ maybe that's why

(btw, just what is the correct term?  game/match/bout ??????)

    Re: Roller Derby

Man, that league must have been around for awhile - did they say she could be part of the fresh meat team? That's a team that doesn't really play. But, they do get to learn to skate, the gameplay, etc.

The correct term is a bout, and we scrimmage!

    Re: Roller Derby

End of January there is a exhibition tournie going down - CANNOT FREAKIN' WAIT! This past month I have dropped about $200 on skate toys. I know my Granma will help towards this, I loves that Christmas card money Wink

I bought, bearings, derby wheels, flashing light up wheels, blingin' rims, a skate tote bag, toe guards, and a flashing toe stop plug. Going to get into jam skating, that should really improve my technique - youtube this, it'll blow yr mind.
