The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
How to play: - Put your media player or portable device on random song shuffle. - Post the first five tracks played, say if you like them, and explain why or why not. - Time limit: you must type your explanation/description before the song ends.
1. Machine Head - "Wolves" Yes. A genuinely mammoth track from a genuinely mammoth album (_The Blackening_), and probably the best song on there. I'm not a huge fan of the band, as their sound gets old after a while, but this album was surely one of 2007's heaviest, and while not the best, it's still a goodie.
2. Hank Mobley - "Split Feelin's" Yes. A classic 60s jazz number from a highly talented and lesser-known ensemble which included the late, great Art Blakey and Paul Chambers. Mobley had a tremendous sound that was smooth and laid-back, yet still lively and full of groove, and that sound is well-displayed on this song from the essential _Soul Station_ album.
3. Opeth - "Harvest" Yes. Regarded by many as one of Opeth's best and most important songs from their [arguably] greatest album, _Blackwater Park_. The unbelievably clean acoustic guitar sound, jazz-laced drumming, and amazing vocal sections continues the legacy of transcendant, clean-vocaled songs that Opeth incorporates throughout their entire catalog, and which would be fully realized on the completely clean album _Damnation_. "Harvest" provides a great transitionary break on an otherwise dark and ferocious album.
4. Van Halen - "Right Now" Yes. A great live rendition of one of the few VH songs I still genuinely appreciate, from the album _Live: Right Here, Right Now_. Catchy, well-written, well-played...what's not to like?
5. Pink Floyd - "Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up" Yes. I can't tell you in five minutes how much I love Pink Floyd, so just assume that it's a lot. This song is a re-recording of the macabre "Careful With That Axe, Eugene," which was one of Pink Floyd's biggest and most popular songs back in the 60s and throughout the 70s. I like this version of the song much better than the original recorded version, as the sound is overall better, and the screaming is much more defined. It's more comparable to the powerful live version of the song that they performed so many times back in the day. I often consider this to be the first post-rock song ever made, though that's just my opinion.

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
Love these kinds of threads. I don't have my full collection on my new computer yet, but I'll work with what I got. 1. "Chapel of Ghouls" by Morbid Angel: Morbid Angel is my favorite death metal band ever, and this song is one of my favorites on the album (Altars of Madness). It's not my favorite album by them (I prefer Blessed Are the Sick and Covenant), but this is still a great one, and, really...you can't go wrong with any of the stuff from the David Vincent era of MA. 2. "Welcome to Planet ***/Psychoholic Slag" by White Zombie: I recently got back into White Zombie after a long period of not listening to them. One day out of the blue, like two weeks ago, I dusted off La Sexorcisto and this song came on...I turned it up way loud. Love the song, just hate that the into is so freakin' long. 3. "Is This Love" by Whitesnake: Yeah, I love this song...I'm not so metal that I can't admit to liking a little Whitesnake. I actually picked this song from my cousin's computer (she had this and a whole bunch of great '90s pop songs that I loved as a kid) to put on my Zune...of course, as I put those 100+ songs on there, the 1100+ songs I had - allllll my metal - got erased. Happy times! 4. "The Haunting" by Testament: Now this is an excellent example of great 80s thrash. Favorite song off of the album (The Legacy). I wish the production on this album could be a teensy bit better though...whenever I listen to this album on my Zune I have to turn the volume up to about 16 (it goes up to 20), and it still is nowhere near as loud as it should be. Oh well, this song still rules. 5. "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister: Come on, who doesn't love this song?! Ths one's a classic. It's a fun song to sing along with...really really loudly. Hate that version that's in that birth control commercial though...that was lame and upsetting.

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
Ok, I'm going again. 1. Spock's Beard - "Thoughts, part II" Yes. An interesting little melodic tune by an imaginative prog rock/metal band, from what is definitely their best album. "Thoughts, part II," which continues a song written 4 years earlier, is a little cheesy at times, but a good display of musicianship, as is commonly expected from these guys. 2. The Quill - "American Powder" Yes. A good fundamentally rocking song from a great and relatively unknown Swedish rock band. (That's right a good non-metal band from Sweden.) Magnus Ekwall is an amazing singer that compliments this great band's hard rock sound that mixes the classic appeal of Led Zeppelin and the heavy crunch of Soundgarden. Competent music and songwriting throughout. 3. Primus - "John the Fisherman" Yes. Anyone who doesn't like Primus fails at life. This is Primus' first reel big hit (get it? "reel" OLOL). Odd, funky, subtly complex, nonsensical, and unique...everything that makes Primus a great band. 4. Metallica - "Harvester of Sorrow" Yes. This is probably my second or third favorite Metallica song. The riffage in this song--and indeed through the whole album--is a testament to how amazing this band used to be. It's not a fast song or even a highly difficult song to play, but it has a power and magnetism that is so massive and sinister that you can't help but be destroyed by it. The center section (~4:00 - 4:43) is metal riffage at its best. Truly one of the best songs from one of the best metal albums ever made. 5. David Bowie - "Diamond Dogs" It's ok. A classic Bowie tune, though it has a little too much of a Rolling Stones influence to be heard as an original song. This is a live version from the '74 tour. Not crazy about it, but it's still an ok tune.

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
first of all, i suck at writing song reviews but anyways here goes 1. Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (Roundhouse Version) A good song off of a great live album. This is one of my favorite tracks off Ghost Reveries and the live version really does well but imo is outdone by older songs, as the production on this cd really makes them shine a lot more, since Ghost of Perdition is a newer track. Overall a great track. 2. Daylight Dies - All We Had Yes, a fucking awesome song from an awesome band from North Carolina. These guys have all the qualities of great doom/death metal while being located in the US. 3. Porcupine Tree - Heartattack in A Layby Another great song from an excellent band. A slow but beautiful song, that usually manages to give me the chills upon listening. Bleak, but lovely 4, Massive Attack - Lately I love this song, just the beats alone make it fucking amazing imo. Massive Attack have songs that can get me so mesmerized and in a trance and this happens to be one of them. 5. Elliott Smith - A Question Mark A good song by Mr. Smith. Like all the others, a bleak but amazing song off his best album imo. Has somewhat of a picture that you can relate to, so that makes in even more interesting "Anyone who doesn't like Primus fails at life" that made me laugh so fucking hard, probably because it's so true

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
Pantera - Drag the Waters A great track off of Trendkill, but not on the same level as Suicide Note Pt. I and II, and Floods. It still fucking rules though \m/ Alice In Chains - Brush Away One of my favorites off of AIC's self-titled album. I <3 the chorus =D Alice In Chains - Down In A Hole One of the first songs I heard from AIC. I saw the Unplugged version, and it drove me to tears. One of my favorite songs of all time. Nirvana - Mr. Moustache Good song, but not a favorite, in other words, I wouldn't have any regret to hit the next button if it came up. Pantera - Cemetery Gates Good god, one of the best songs of all time, with an amazing solo from Dime. Phil shows here the versatility in his voice, or rather, the versatility that he had. It's a shame he can't hit the high notes anymore =(

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion

Kreator - when the sun burns red. have not listened to them for ages. guess what i doing after. great song for riffage and drums never been to keen on the singer. great solo. far from their best song tough. 2. Tool - Ticks and leeches one of my favorite songs off Lateralus my fav tool album. love the middle piece where it goes all calm and quiet before going mental - great song. 3. Children of Bodom - Punch Me I Bleed got this off a friend never been to big on them pianos in a metal band as a main instrument gets really annoying. that alexi guy is a great guitarist but nothing new. not a bad band but but not a great one especially judging by this song. 4. Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
Great thread Riff! Don't expect too much of my list since 80% on my mp3 is either crap or guilty pleasure. Aaaaaaand....shuffle. 1. Type O Negative - "Our Little Joke" (October Rust's 2nd Track) HAH, Laughed my ass off at this (and the preceding Bad Ground), but it's not really a song, just funny. 2. Stevie Ray Vaughan - Rude Mood Brilliant song, Fastest song on Texas Flood, hell......fastest blues-rock song ever, it's scary how seemless his playing goes throughout the whole song without it ever sounding forced. 3. ZZ Top - La Grange Like it a lot, based on an instantly recognisable simple blues riff. driving bass and drums after one of the coolest intros ever. 4. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City Ah, Bruce. Off the critically acclaimed album Nebraska, I bring you one of his best songs. Simple folk guitar with haunting vocals and some pretty dark lyrics, forget Born To run/In the U.S.A., this is Bruce at his best. 5. John Lee Hooker - Bluebird Aww Yeah, feel the bass, repetitive though it might be. It has everything any good blues song should have + John Lee Hooker, it makes me feel like a C L motherf/cker every time. That wasn't nearly as horrifying as I thought it would be, if 50 Cent had popped up, I would've had some explaining to do.

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
Good stuff so far. Here I go again: 1. Nobuo Uematsu - "The Fierce Battle" Yes. The Mr. Uemastu, the champion of video game soundtracks. And I love this song. It's comes up only a couple times during Final Fantasy 3 (VI), during the battle with Atma Weapon, and I think one of the early Kefka battles. /geek
2. ZZ Top - "I Got the Six" Yes. Cool song from _Eliminator_, one of the best "classic" rock/blues rock albums ever made. (See, I still enjoy many "normal" albums.)
3. Mortification - "Web of Fire" Yes. Nothing like a little Christian death metal every once in a while. It's hard to believe this Aussie band has been around in one form or another for over 20 years. But they have been, and wielding Christianity through extreme metal music like a battle axe. This song is far from their best, but it's still all right. As with most of this band's catalog, the lyrics can be corny, and sometimes downright stupid (despite the "message" they deliver), but the music is typically solid and of head-banging quality, even if the vocals aren't always as brutal as you would hope.
4. Jordan Rudess - "Screaming Head" Meh. It's ok. A solo effort from Dream Theater keyboardist, Rudess. Despite his synth-based, mostly instrumental solo work being star-studded, it doesn't really do much for me, and this song is no exception. And if my ear does not fail me, I believe Joe Satriani makes an appearance on this track. Rudess is a really great keyboardist with major skills, but his music always leaves me wanting more, and wishing he would use his talent to make good music, instead of just making gaudy, sub-par, prog rock. For one, how about more piano/organ and less synth?
5. Steve Miller Band - "Serenade" Meh. Nothing special. Not a huge fan, but Miller is good as what he's good at. Namely, smooth, laid-back, psychedelic-tinged blues rock. Which I really have to be in the mood for, and that's hardly ever. Keep him on the iPod mostly for request purposes.

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
This is fun, wheeeee. 1. Alice in Chains - We Die Young (Demo) Of course I like this one. A lot rougher and more unpolished than the Facelift version, and that solo guitar does some weird Morello like squealing not found in the Facelift one. 2. The Beatles - Come Together One of my favorite Beatle songs, a psychedelic bass riff with handclapping and flapping drums start this song off and set the tone for the rest of this groovy song. 3. Nine Inch Nails - Head Like A Hole Meh, not a big NIN fan. One of the most overrated songs too. 4. CCR - Run Through The Jungle Love it, Psychedelic intro and the drumming brings out the jungle in this song, also Fogerty's unmistakable growling vocals service the vibe very well. 5. Tom Waits - Big Black Mariah , If a flaming triple bourbon straight-up could talk it would sound like Tom Waits, it's hard not to visualize yourself sitting at the bar in a dimly lit pub when listening to this song.

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
1. Neil Young - "The Restless Consumer" It's ok. Far from classic Neil. I like the grungy fuzz guitar and message of anti-conformity, but overall it's not exactly a stand-out track from Neil's portfolio. 2. JS Bach - "Cantata #135, BWV 135, 'Ach Herr, Mich Armen Sünder' - 6. Ehr Sie Ins Himmels Throne" The concluding movement from Bach's humble 135th Cantata. Simple and beautiful. One of the first and most brilliant, influential, and prolific musical minds of all time. 3. Dream Theater - "Money" Cover version of the Pink Floyd song done as part of the "album covers" bootleg series by Dream Theater. It's a really good version, true to the original, with a few added improv sections for guitar and vocals. LaBrie can't really capture David Gilmour's vocals completely, but he still does a good job, as do all the band members. This track also features a guest spot by Roger Waters' saxophonist (who's name eludes me). 4. Iced Earth - "When the Night Falls" Though Iced Earth often crosses over into the realm of power metal, they are at their best with classic thrash songs like this one. This is a rerecording of the original song from the first album. It is from the album _Days of Purgatory_, a compilation of classic IE songs redone with Matt Barlow on vocals...therefore making them much better than the originals. A classic from one of the great thrash bands in their prime. 5. Kayo Dot - "Aura on an Asylum Wall" Simply put: one of the best songs ever. If I was to make a list of my 20 favorite songs, this one would be in there, possibly even in the top 10. It starts with a mysterious riff and short lyric verse, then moves from an amazing jazz instrumental to a dramatic rock interlude, and ends in a cacophony of noise, static, and feedback. Toby Driver is very close to going down in my book as a musical genius...a term I don't use very often at all.

I feel left out. I still listen to CDs.
Love the reviews though!

I still OWN CDs. But through the magic of technologiezorz they are all on my computer for the ultimate listening experience. But if you really feel left out, close your eyes and point to 5 albums in your collection, then pick five random songs and express your love or hate for them.

Re: The MP3 Shuffle Game / random music discussion
1) "Hungry for You (J'Aurais Toujours Faim de Toi)" by The Police: Yeah, love this song. I was in second grade when The Police became my first favorite band. I remember trying to sing this song and not knowing what the hell I was saying. Guess things don't change much... 2) "Sunny Came Home" by Shawn Colvin: Still love this song. I sang it for a talent show when I was seven (In Trinidad, we used to have little family talent shows ans practice our songs and dances for weeks). 3) "Aesthetics of Hate" by Machine Head: This is the song that got me into Machine Head. I dunno what took me so long. I'm a huge fan of the band that Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel were in in the '80s (excellent thrash band called Vio-lence, one of my favorite bands), but for a long time I was too busy getting Machine Head confused with Fear Factory (still don't know why). Then I heard this song and it hit me like a damn pillowcase filled with bricks upside the head. This song kicks huge amounts of ass, as does the whole album. 4) "The Lion's Den" by Morbid Angel: As I mentioned before, pretty much anything from Vincent-era MA is a gem. This is no exception. Pete Sandoval's drumming is what gets me. If I were a guy, the section at about 1:24 - 1:29-ish where everything drops out except for the vocal and double bass would make me sprout a huge boner. 5) "Open Arms" by Journey: Now, let's get something straight: I don't like Journey. In my eyes, they're right up there with Billy Joel and Staind in the House of Lame. But this song raises the hair on my arms...but that could have something to do with the fact that I just sneezed one of those perfume-overload or pepper-storm sneezes. Seriously, what a great song.
