1) "Masked Jackal" by Coroner:

Quite possibly one of the best thrash metal songs EVER. Awesome thrash band from Switzerland. I recommend their album Punishment for Decadence. When I listen to that album, I feel bad for the people around me, because they're missing out on so much awesomeness.

2) "Rust in Peace...Polaris" by Megadeth:

One of my favorites off of the Rust in Peace album. This song is so incredibly fierce.

3) "Welcome Home" by King Diamond:

Come on, it's King Diamond! Whenever I hear this song, I immediately wanna hear it five more times.

4) "Lone Justice" by Anthrax:

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I really do love this song. It's one of my favorite Anthrax songs, and it's great fun to sing in the shower.

5) "Playing with Spiders/Skullkrusher" by Overkill:

I'm actually surprised that I like this song. It's ten minutes long, but it doesn't get boring at all. Someone told me it sucked before I heard it, but I disagree...I like it. Blitz's voice sounds awesome on this song (but then again, I think his voice sounds awesome on every Overkill song.)

1. Gomez - Get Miles

Very trippy and relaxing, love that guy's voice it's almost Louis Armstrongish. it's a simple electric beat and the instruments come and go during the whole song, double-bass, horns, odd percussion, 70's twangy guitar. Nice lyrics too, about leaving it all behind.

2. Kinks - Well Respected Man

Very nice, Kinks > Beatles.

3. Maximum The Hormone - What's Up People?

Over the top Japanese Grindcore, I have no idea what they're singing about but the guitars are a-blazing, roughness a la Meshuggah and some very cool and interesting song structures/riffs, it;s just a b!itch getting over the first hump of hearing them sing/roar/rap in Japanese. (side-note, it's really over-produced)

4. Rise Against - Dead Ringer

Noooooo, it's crap, every time I hear that malnourished pro-greenpeace singer vibrating his larynx, I get the urge to club seals.

5.  Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five

Groovy baby, don;t have much to say about this one, if you like it you already know, if you don't know it, you don't like it.

2. Prince - Gold

Pretty good song, nothing special though, but it does come from the period when he still made good music (3121 doesn't count, since it was pre-recorded but went unreleased for years) because quite frankly, Planet Earth was bull. (If I hear Guitar again I'm going to kick someone)

3. Fugazi - Waiting Room

Great bassline, but the rest of the song is pretty mediocre. On top of that, it's a pretty straightforward band that hardly surprises.(OK it's punk, so it doesn't have to)

4. Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich - Hold Tight

This is the live version and much better than the album version. If you don't know the band go and watch Death Proof (Tarantino) it has this song in the movie and some background info on 'em. (OK song btw)

5. Carl Orff - Carmin Burana (O Fortuna)

Doesn't ring a bell you say?

You've heard it a billion times at the climax of hundreds of movies.

1. Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
Yes. I know it's a cliche by now, but I really like this song, and this is definitely the best version ever made. I mainly like it because, as optimistic a song as it is, I like to picture something really disturbing and horrible happening while it plays. That may seem morbid to some, but I appreciate the drastic, self-inflicted irony.

2. Steve Morse Band - Pick You Position
Yes. Steve Morse has been my favorite guitar player for quite some time. Amazingly virtuostic and jovial without being pretentious; shredding completely without wanking. Much better in a live environment, but this song is a good upbeat addition to his extensive portfolio. Not his best album, but still good.

3. Dream Theater - Perfect Strangers
Yes. They distinguished themselves with this great live Deep Purple cover on the semi-live EP, _A Change of Seasons_. However, this particular version is from the '98 official live bootleg in LA, and features Bruce Dickinson on vocals. Therefore it rules on many levels, despite lacking somewhat in the sound department, and the omission of the solo at the end.

4. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Fight Like a Brave
Yes. RAAAAAAAH! 80's Chili Peppers aka, when they were still good. It wouldn't last much longer.

5. Tangerine Dream - Search
It's ok. From the _Sorcerer_ soundtrack. Eerie and somewhat cheesy. Reminds me, I need to see this movie eventually. Or maybe not.

1. Buddy Holly - Everyday

Yes. Every time I hear this song with the lap-slapping and the celesta I feel like I'm 4 years old and playing in a sandbox....disturbing, I know, but I'm just stressing the sweetness and innocence of this song.

2. Deep Purple - Black Night

Yup. One of the first songs I played live, not the hardest song in the DP (snicker) catalogue, but it does have an amazing groove and cool bursts of solo guitar in which it fades out.

3. Wilco - Impossible Germany

Hellz Yeah. These guys rule. Only have the one album "Sky Blue Sky" and it doesn't have one bad song on it. They sound very Neil Young and the amazing thing about them is how they glide in and out of a solo which is reminiscent of Explosions In The Sky.

4. Opeth - The Drapery Falls

I hate Death-Metal vocals with a passion, only a handful of the bands utilizing cookie-monster vox I can stand listening to, because the music is so good.

1. Cruachan - "Celtica (Voice Of The Morrigan)"
Meh. I just can't get into this band. They should be better than they are. They combine Celtic folk elements with metal, with some songs more extreme than others. On the surface, that seems like a good idea, and it's what made me pick up the album. But they just don't execute it very well. I do like Karen Gilligan's vocals in the middle section of this song though.

2. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - "There Is a Kingdom"
Yes. Mellow and solemn. Among Nick Cave's better works.

3. Peter Gabriel - "My Head Sounds Like That"
It's ok. Not one of his great songs by any means, but it's Peter Gabriel, so it's at least somewhat good. It's got a good flow to it when you're listening to the whole album, but it's just kind of boring for a random track. Makes me want to throw on "Sledgehammer" instead...but I won't cheat.

4. Clifford Brown - "Minor Mood"
Yes. A great jazz classic by a man who is probably nearly forgotten in the world of  modern music. It's shame he died so young. He had a lot of potential, and I'm sure he would have been very prolific in the 60s and 70s, and I'm sure some Miles Davis collaborations would have happened.

5. Triumph - "The City"
Yes. A largely instrumental epic that truly delivers. Well, kind of. Part rock ballad, part classical, part flamenco... So what if they're the poor man's Rush? They're still an awesome band.

1. Feel Good Hit of the Summer- Queens of the Stone Age

A song about drugs. Well of course it is, if the lyrics are "Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol cocccaaiinnneee"funny thing is, when QOTSA played a show at a rehab in L.A. this was their first song. um they were thrown out...

2. Houses of the Holy- Led Zeppelin

Come on.. it's like Led Zeppelin. Those two words could be translated into "Total Genius". Jimmy Page's guitar on this work is awesome, it's one of my favorite Led Zep songs. Robert Plant does some good vocals too, same with John Bonham, he's always great and John Paul Jones is too. 

3. Dead and Bloated- Stone Temple Pilots

What a great opener to an awesome album. I really love Core. Scott Weiland is such a great singer, I love the first part "I am smellin the rosee.." and the line "You can't swallow what I'm thinking." the Deleo brothers, always great. and random drummer guy because I can't remember his name.. it might be eric kretz?..well he's always good.

4. Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana

LOL. I can't believe this song came up. It's actually the single version, I got it for 2 bucks. Anyways.. It changed a generation, it has to be good, eh? Although it's hard to understand and if you do understand what the hell Cobain is singing, it's random.. it's a pretty cool song..

5.  Prison Sex- Tool

What a fucking sad song. The song is about child abuse/molestation. The music video is really adds to the intensity. The lines "Do onto others what has been done to me" is like a scary twist on that phrase everyone has heard their whole life. The song really makes me cringe every time I hear it. I rarely watch the video, it seriously freaks me out.

1. Alice In Chains - Bleed The Freak (Bootlegged)

I fucking love this song one of my all time favorites, although this particular bootleg doesn't do the song justice due to the crowd being heard over the band in certain points >_> Although in the parts you do hear Laynes vocals are dead on easily better than the studio version

 
2. Pearl Jam - Marker In The Sand (Live at the Gorge)

Yay another live song. One of the better songs from Pearl Jams later years in my opinion and this version sounds great the band was dead on in there performance.

 

3. Metallica - Welcome Home

One of my favorite Metallica songs although rarely a song a choose to listen to Im not that big on Metallica although I almost always love listening to there earlier work

 
4. Nirvana - Pennyroyal Tea

Yay my favorite Nirvana song and I love Nirvana. Its a shame they didn't do more songs in this sort of style it plays more to there strengths in my opinion.

I got a life version of the last song so Im just skipping it >_>

 

5. Jerry Cantrell - My Song

An ok song I personally like the style is in but find the lyrics a bit repetitive which throws it of a little. Plus Jerry can do much better than he does on this song =/

1. UM.. Whip It- Devo..

yeah... I'd like it, if I was in the 80s.. I listened to it so much a while ago it's extremely annoying. It's kinda catchy, the high-hat is cool.

2. Go With the Flow- Queens of the Stone Age.

This was the first  QotSA song I heard. Its one of my favorites.. it has like the coolest video. (Look in my sig for a clip of it) Josh Homme's vocals are brilliant and Dave Grohl hits hard.. he' s my favorite drummer.

3. Break On Through (To the Other Side)- The Doors

Yay! One of my favorite Doors songs. Jim Morrison is great (RIP). The drums are good, same with the keyboards. The vocals are really strong and nice, I love the lyrics.

4. State of Love and Trust- Pearl Jam

My favorite Pearl Jam song. (Well 2nd...) I love the guitar, it's really cool. Eddie Vedder's vocals are good. I love when it's in singles.. in the Club scene.. "We'll always go dancing!" It really is an all together perfect song.

5. Them Bones- Alice In Chains

What a great song. I love how there's a silence.. then Layne's vocals come in. It's great when you first listen to Dirt and the song comes like a suprise. The lyrics are great. Of course, Jerry's guitar playing skills are great, when are they not?

1. Sufjan Stevens - Chicago (acoustic)

Great friggin' stuff, I like this version even better than the original, the "Adult Contemporary Version" or the "Multiple Personality Disorder Version". Simple guitar playing, but some great haunting vocals sung in tandem.
Especially the chorus if this song makes my hairs stand on end.

2. Fu Manchu - Evil Eye

Crunching wah intro grips your balls and doesn't let go until it's final yelp into the vocals. Funky stoner meets skater rock. Great song to listen to every once in a while.

3. April March - Chick Habit

Just a fun song, the highschool girl vocals give a nice contrast to the threatening lyrics.

4. Devil Doll - The Girl Who Was...Death

 Can't review his song without reviewing the whole album. Clocking in at 66 minutes and 6 seconds it's the third lengthiest song on my mp3.
The singing is only present in the backing vocals (oohs and aahs) and the main vocals are in an awkward narrating style. Great use of violins in combination with metal riffs are probably the thing that really stands out in this album. Fast musical passages are followed by metaphorical narration until silence sets in at about 40 minutes into the song. The silence is broken 2 minutes before the end by an excerpt of an episode of "The Prisoner". The very end is used for their own interpretation of The Prisoner's themesong.

5. Pearl Jam - Pilate

Probably.......no DEFINITELY their worst song, writing credits to Jeff Ament on the album Yield, oddly enough, on that same album the credits for Low Light go to him, which is one of Yield's best songs.

A cover song, I can't think of the orginal artist atm, but another great song. I love the female vocals on it.

A fucking crazy song off my favorite SYL album.

4) Old Man's Child - Return of the Night Creatures

A good song off one of my favorite OMC albums. Love the raw sound these songs have to them compared to later releases.

5) Alice in Chains - Real Thing

GREAT SONG with many levels - great hometown band and will always like them - go Billy, scream it out!!!

2)  Metallica - Enter Sandman:

Excellent song, but too much radio play (which maybe isn't that bad of a thing, but wears out the listening pleasure because becomes too worn), still a great overall song.  "Off to never, never" keep repeating a song on the radio!

3)  The Lovin' Spoonful - You Didn't Have To Be So Nice:

"You didn't have to be" on my iPod!  How the hell did this get on here?  Wimpy song from a compilation of oldies, I guess

4)  Zakk Wylde - Dead As Yesterday:

Great guitarist, but a song that's a bit too subtle.  Like a lullaby - think I can go back to sleep now.  Like Zakk's guitar playing, but not particularly his voice.

5)  Eric Clapton - Alberta:

Classic Clapton - another slow bluesy one (oh my!), two in a row - now I'm REALLY tired!!!

1. Modern life is war- DEADRAMONES

--Yes. I think it's extremely hard to find bands that I actually like nowadays. This band caught my attention about a year ago. This is the song that got my attention. Lyrically, they're awesome. I hate being at home doing nothing knowing that I can be somewhere else doing something WAY better. And that's what the songs about.

2. Coldplay- The scientist

--Yes. I love this song! The tune is great, and I just love how he plays the piano. Sadly, this song reminds me of a breakup.

3. Otep- Warhead.

--Yes. This song is really focused on the war in Iraq. I love the lyrics in this song. I love Otep Shamaya because she is just simply amazing. What more can I say?

4. Stone Temple Pilots- Big Bang Baby

--YESSS. I can actually DANCE to this song. hahaha!

5. Adam and the Ants- Stand and Deliver

--OF COURSE. Adam Ant= the sheeuuut. Adam and the ants were always so talented. I can't help but sing along to it, even thought I don't have the accent. I could try though...
