Nutshell... especially the unplugged version, if that counts.

It's the first song on my Alice playlist, plus just the amazing simplicity of the song, it gives me chills. I've come across very few other songs that are sung with such feeling.

    BlackCross:

    A little Bitter

Layne is so intense and angry like he is directing the lyrics at somone who has wronged him. Every member really shines in that song.

Get Born Again and Head Creeps should not be forgotten either.

fuck, i was thinking the same when i first saw the question.
    it's def A little Bitter

i dont know, imo, i do see lots of anger happening during the years when layne is still in the aic

the band was struggling to get together to make music, layne is struggling with his life (which very unfortunate, at the end of his years, i think he is still very angry about himself about not being able to solve his problems)

i dont know, it's just my opinion

but since now the aic is getting new stuff, i think there will be definitely a new song that could define the band;-)

    Re: Most Definitive Song?

easy...Would?    Would? represent everything that AIC is.  Guitar solo, Singing Layne/Screaming Layne, heavy bass riff, Seattle scene (Andrew Wood), drugs.  And then there is the video aspect which clearly is identified by the trends they set, (Mikes attire) (Laynes beard) (Jerry's stocking cap).

IMO you can't have a song representing AIC without a drug reference and a video.  Creatively, AIC could tell us the story of a song through its videos.  All other songs are left to speculation.  I'm not saying that I dont like songs like "Whale & Wasp" and "A Little Bitter", there tremendous.  I realize this topic asks us personally to descripe their most definitive song, but amongst the populous, "Would?" is their most identifiable song.

    "Would?" . . . "Man in the Box" . . . "Angry Chair" . . . "Sea of Sorrow" . . .

    "Nutshell" . . . "No Excuses" . . .

But -- These songs, even if I heard them for the first time and didn't know the artist, I'd still recognize them as AIC's for more than the obvious reasons:

"Rotten Apple," "Got Me Wrong," and "Get Born Again"

    You are never really dead
until the last memory of you is gone . . .

    Re: Most Definitive Song?

For me.. Dirt and Angry Chair are tied as their most definitive songs. Dark lyrics and melody.

But.. in general, I'd go with Man in the box or Would? because were big hits and.. well.. because they're great songs!

    Re: Most Definitive Song?

Everybody has listed great songs. Definitive for an individual is probably different than definitive in a general sense. You can't argue against Would? For the general public, I would say either Man in the Box/Them Bones, I'll go with Them Bones.

RIP Layne. The music lives on..........

Definitely "Down in a Hole" which just breathes despair and pain.   Such raw emotion that just moves me every single time I listen to it...

Down in a Hole, Losin' my Soul
Down in a Hole, Losin' Control
    I'd like to Fly
But my Wings have been so Denied
