PittsburghSmoker: If you were to walk in a tattoo shop that also offers body modifications, what would the customer have on the menu to select from?
Is this like big ear ring holes? I have seen some people actually implant things under their skin that gives them bumps like a reptile, I guess that would be a body modification. Do people have, like toes removed, or ribs removed? Does it include scarring?
Dunno. Kind of a general question because I am not quite sure what else falls in to this category.
Body modification is a spectrum of possibilities. People often forget that anything you do to alter your body can be considered modification. This ranges from dying your hair to piercings/tattoos..and even more extreme things. It's all body modification.
What you have to select from at a shop just depends on what their specialties are and what laws they are bound by. Some things are legal in some places while others are not. Also, alot of shops in bigger places have alot more to offer because they have a diverse group of customers.
Shops can offer anything from piercings/tattoos..to scarification..suspensions..dermal punching..it really depends. I've even been hearing about the eyeball tattooing craze.
Yes, they can even do implants. Alot of the more extreme procedures require a medical liscense.
As far as the big ear holes, unless the person gets them scalpelled..those holes start out the size of a regular ear piercing. The process of stretching is a journey for the wearer and usually a sign of dedication or spirituality. So thats not done in one day, usually. But alot of shops will offer help stretching for those customers who would rather someone else help them with it.
Your correct aswell..there are people do amputate body parts but I don't believe that takes place at the actual shop. As I've said before..alot of things (especially in the US) are considered illegal. But amputation is definately not uncommon.
Body modification is truely fascinating because like I said before it's a giant spectrum. Someone is always pushing the limits. Like Fakir Musafar back in his day, Jim Ward, the Lizard Man, Noman Pan, and Stalking Cat, Enigma..Steve Haworth..along with many many others. I think they have all made amazing contributions and opened alot of people's eyes.
I find it so beautiful to see that we are evolving and experimenting with our bodies. I think since I've started going further down the body modification path..I've found a deeper sense of self.
I look forward to the day when I can continue to explore different procedures without having to deal with legal restrictions.
