    i agree with 95% of that post. call me crazy but i like icky thump. the foos are fuckin great. all of those bands that said suck, do suck bad. i loathe them all.  i do like the pot but i see where you are comin from. vicarious is good but played out...and i personally think 10,000 days is not just good but fucking awesome. i'm tired of it though.

    btw altough incubus is on a delcine they are still one of the few mainstream bands i like. the last album wasn't that great but it was solid. i liked about half of it.

    Don't know what it is about Incubus' sound that I've always been drawn to...I don't know *** about Light Grenades except Anna Molly.

    Seriously though, that is a really good album. And it's funny you should bring it up, because I just saw it in a shop the other day, and it reminded me to go back and listen to it.

    Sorry 'bout the hijack Rif, from now on I'll just conform to your rantings again Mr Green

    I don't write reviews so starting a 'blog' just for this one would be board polution, besides the twerpster is doing a mighty fine job at that all by herself.

    But I'm glad to hear you like the album. I'm sure the 'Rifugian Stamp of Approval®' will be more than enough incentive for Mr. Reeder to consider bringing out a second solo album......just 18 more years......whooo.

    It doesn't matter. People can put their reviews in here. As long as they're for good albums. Or bashing bad albums. Twisted

    Not really a fan. They're good, I just don't really listen to them.

    Re: The Rifugium Chronicles: a thread for open-minded music listeners.

    I'm feeling kind of weird tonight. And not just from alcohol, though I did have a few frothy beverages before my show tonight.

    Concert #181 wasn't really a concert. It was a performance by the Kids In the Hall at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA. It was an awesome show too. I expected a lot of recycled stuff (which still would have been good since they're always great), but it was all pretty much bits that I had never seen before. They were really good on stage, just as good as on TV (which is live anyway, but you know what I mean), their chemistry was just as it was years ago, and their involvement with the crowd and general self-cynicism left the crowd wanting nothing else at the end of the show. I'm sure we all would have stayed 10 times as long, but they performed for nearly 2 hours, and that's pretty long for a comedy routine.

    On a different note, I got home from the show only a few minutes ago to discover that an online acquaintance of mine from the old Dream Theater forums died today. I really can't believe this. I never told him, but identified with him a lot, because like myself (arguably), he was a man of good taste in many areas of life, and notoriously outspoken and defendant of his own viewpoints. He listened to good music, had a healthy passion for life, and was a rigid philosopher and theologian, and an overall ambitious person. If I had known him in real life, I'm sure he and I would have been great friends, and now that this has happened, I know that this will never happen. I really never would have expected something like this to happen, and in such a senseless way. I don't really know what else to say about it. All I know is, we both philosophized about the "afterlife" before and I'm sure I'll meet him out there somewhere, and sometime.

    One of the last things he said just a week ago, ironically in a thread asking "Would you rather die in your sleep or awake?" was "Awake. I want to be praying when I die." So hopefully after his struggle to survive in the end, he got his final wish.

    Farewell and Godspeed, bud.

    The dance of the puppets
    The rusted chains of prison moons
    Are shattered by the sun.
    I walk a road, horizons change
    The tournaments begun.
    The purple piper plays his tune,
    The choir softly sing;
    Three lullabies in an ancient tongue,
    For the court of the crimson king.

    The keeper of the city keys
    Put shutters on the dreams.
    I wait outside the pilgrims door
    With insufficient schemes.
    The black queen chants
    The funeral march,
    The cracked brass bells will ring;
    To summon back the fire witch
    To the court of the crimson king.

    The gardener plants an evergreen
    Whilst trampling on a flower.
    I chase the wind of a prism ship
    To taste the sweet and sour.
    The pattern juggler lifts his hand;
    The orchestra begin.
    As slowly turns the grinding wheel
    In the court of the crimson king.

    On soft gray mornings widows cry
    The wise men share a joke;
    I run to grasp divining signs
    To satisfy the hoax.
    The yellow jester does not play
    But gentle pulls the strings
    And smiles as the puppets dance
    In the court of the crimson king.

    Oh, Rif, I am so sorry to hear of your friend's passing.  25 is way too young to die.  It sounds like you were much closer than just online buddies, sounds like you bonded on a sort of spiritual level.  If he was as you describe, then he sounds like a special guy.

    You have honored your friend well.

     Very sad, tragic death.  I'm very sorry...

    I didn't know him too well. But we had some good conversations about life, death, religion, philosophy, music... And of course we had a few disputes. I stopped posting on the DT boards a long time ago, and hadn't talked to him since. I wish I had known the guy better. He was intelligent and insightful, and I'm pretty sure he was on his way to getting a PhD. I find it especially disturbing that he died in such a meaningless way.

    Re: The Rifugium Chronicles: a thread for open-minded music listeners.

    It's really strange seeing how many people are affected by this guy's death. I guess it really shows how close even an online community can be. I've been reading over responses to his death, and I find myself holding back tears here. I've been getting IMs all through the night, some from people I haven't talked to in years.

    This was really a waste of human potential. But I always tell people not to rue for the past, and to always dwell on what good people gave us in life, so I'm going to do the same. Life goes on, and for him, he's just ascended to another plane.

    I just regret that I never saved any of our conversations. There was a short-lived message board that he started a few years ago called "The Plane Tree." It was basically him, myself, and about 5 other people who just talked religion and philosophy. It only lasted a few months, but we accomplished a lot there, and I feel there was so much more we could have accomplished. I almost feel like starting it up again.

    That would be a good way to remember your friend, Rif.... and probably very therapeutic for you and your other online friends......

    Re: The Rifugium Chronicles: a thread for open-minded music listeners.

    Well, again, I really didn't talk to him as much as other people, and it's probably been a couple years since I've talked to him at all. But I know he had a lot of "close" friends (as close as you can be on the internet, that is) over in that community, and I'm sure they're planning something. I popped in to pay my respects, but that's about it. For now anyway.
