Cool Places to visit and why
Can be in the United States or outside. Travel can be very enlightening, and I would like to hear some people's experiences and gather ideas on places to visit.

Cool stuff BNB. Read that you were in Alaska, got to spend a month there a few years ago. Stayed in Anchorage for a good bit but was also up in Denali Park (pit stopped in Talkeetna). Always wanted to see Mt McKinley. Explored the area via plane, boat and train. The nature and landscape is humbling, it was an awesome experience.

Re: Cool Places to visit and why
I usually never go back to a place I've been twice, but Alaska is truly one exception to that rule. I'd love to go back to see the interior, more northern portions of Alaska and Denali, as you did. A friend of mine camped and saw Denali by horseback (small portion only, of course) and loved it. When I was there, I went up the inside passage by boat to Glacier Bay, Skagway (White Pass), Haines (whale watching), Juneau (Mendenhall Glacier), Ketchikan (salmon fishing), and Misty Fjords. It was truly awesome! This was back in '99, so I'm glad I was able to see Mendenhall and fly over the Juneau ice field when I did because now most of the glaciers have substantially receded - a terrible thing because they were so massive and so beautiful! Yep, you're right, Alaska is very humbling and jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Re: Cool Places to visit and why
I go and visit my family in Europe occasionally. It's been about five years since I've been over and I believe I'm going to go this year. But I liked visiting Scotland/England/Wales. I loved looking at the castles

Cool. Lot's more places in Europe I have got to get to. Would like to get to Ireland one of these days. Castles are neat, saw Windsor Castle among others. Some of the grounds of these castles were just jaw dropping. The sense of history was a bit overwhelming. Did get to England, Scotland, and France. Spent a good bit of time in London(stayed at a place right at Piccadilly Circus) , Bath, Paris and Edinburgh. All recommended! Went to Stonehenge, fascinating...............

Re: Cool Places to visit and why
I work for an airline - so I've been to some pretty amazing places. Some of my specific favourites:
Taking the Hurricane Katrina bus tour in New Orleans. It was a very moving and sensative educational tour that explained things far better than the media ever did. Eating fish and chips with a cheap bottle of plonk on the beach at sunset at St Kilda in Melbourne Australia
The Catacombs in the darkest depths of underground Paris. I've never seen so many bones!! Magic Castle in Hollywood. You need to be a member, know a member or stay at the attached hotel (which is what I did) to get in, but it was SO WORTH IT!
Eating breakfast at bills in Sydney Clovelly in Devon in England. Tiny little village on the side of a hill leading down to the sea. They use donkeys to get goods up and down the single main street.

Oh yes, I am quite a picture taker when travelling. If they were JPEGS, I would post a few, but I did not take them with my digital camera. Might have to scan a few photos eventually and then manually load them to the site. Some of the shots from Alaska are great too. Thanks for the posts, it is always neat to hear of those travel experiences. Once in a while while travelling, I get the feeling that the place/spot in time is exactly where I want to be, that is a neat feeling. Stonehenge might be the oldest man made thing on the face of the Earth. It's history and meaning is fascinating and not exactly fully understood.

Where do you plan to go to next? I've got 7 days in Hawaii in July (first time visitor) and 5 in Seattle for the Tribute weekend in Aug (again - first time visitor) I can't wait!

Just to Waikiki - we are only going for 7 nights. We plan to do a day trip to the big island and see the volanco, other than that we are just hanging around Honolulu and do the touristy stuff.

Wow, I'm so jealous! I love Waikiki! Next time you should plan to go to Kauai, too - it is the most beautiful place on earth. Come back with pics and tell us all about it!!

Re: Cool Places to visit and why
Well, living in the UK I've seen lots of this country. From the tops of Scotland, to the bottom of England. Been all over Wales, the British countryside is actually some of the nicest places I've been. Never been to Ireland though, for some reason. I've been to France, where I stayed with my Uncle, who has a farmhouse in the middle of some tiny, remote French town. From there we drove to Spain and all the way back to the UK. That was an experience. Last year I stayed 4 months in South Australia, had an amazing time, met some of the best/craziest people ever. Words can't describe Australia, it is quite an amazing place. Going down to the beach after work in the hot weather and chilling out on the beach is really something I wish I could do everyday. I didn't leave SA but I still had a great time exploring, camping out near beaches, in the outback and went to some wild parties. I'd recommend it to anybody, I'm definitely going back for more some time next year! I really want to visit the US, but not the typical cities like NY & LA, I'd like a road trip through from the East and ending up in the West, finishing off in Seattle of course! Maybe 2009/2010!

Re: Cool Places to visit and why
As an American, I really haven't seen alot of my country. All over New England of course, cause that's where I live, spent some time in Aspen Co skiing, FLA, and mostly places on the eastern seaboard. What I love is the Caribbean, I've been to Aruba many times, Grand Cayman, St. Maartin, Belize, Roatan (technically Central America) Curaco, Bermuda, Mexico-Cancun, Costa Maya, Cozumel, Xtapa. Punta Cana-Dom. Rep.. I can't believe I've never been to Ireland, my brothers has lived there for 13 years, I have no excuse (I picture rain and old castles) I'm going to Vegas in July. Oh yeah, the question was why do you go to these places? Because I like it where it's warm, laid back and relaxing.
River of Deceit - if you want to start your road trip in the East, I have a house in Maine on a lake, and a house in NH 20 mins from the ocean
