    Re: German Thread

Jetzt habe ich eine Frage. Möchten Sie sie antworten? (Is all of that right? But that's not my question this time LOL)

It's actually a much more pathetic question... Um, ok, in English "(subject) (verb) (direct object)" is accusitive (Maybe, can't really remember LOL) So it's accusitive in German, too, stimmt? I got a book on \it just to get some more in, and I sped through until all of the stupid noun gender article Mist and I realized I have no idea what the hell the other things are except that and nominative. (grab book) Genitive and dative. I know what to do if I should encounter a sentance involving either of those, but if I encounter one, I'll just know it's not nominative or accusitive LOL. Play it safe and say it's feminine, leave it alone for 'em LOL And not only is it lacking an english example of each, its Deutsch ones aren't the 'same words rearranged for morons' kind that I apparently need LOL Have any ideas to explain it, oder...? Danke!

    Re: German Thread

Sorry, I guess caffine affects my talking online too LOL I'll remember to keep it short...

I just need examples of genitive and dative noun... cases or whatever they're called. Things that change the article. Preferably with the same words so I can see what the difference is...

    Re: German Thread

Okay... that is really complicated in German. You know there's Akkusativ, Dativ, Genitiv und Nominativ. I guess Nominativ is the easiest.

Der blauer Ball --> the blue ball. That's Nominativ, the ball is the subject.

Ich spiele mit einem blauen Ball --> I play with a blue ball. That's Dativ. Now... it's dativ because of the preposition "mit". Something you need to learn is which preposition goes with which. Mit is always dativ no matter what. There are others that can be akkusativ or dativ. Some are always akkusativ. I used to know them all by heart, I'll see if I can find my old german books and help ya out with that. It's very handy to learn that by heart Wink

Den blauen Ball --> that's akkusativ. With akkusativ, der changes to den, and the ending of blau is en. Now, I can't think of a good way to explain when this is used, so ill get back to you with that.

Now... Genitiv... is quite complicated to explain, cause you don't have this in English... a good example is Wegen des Regens  which means "because of the rain"

Wegen des Regens konnten wir nicht draussen spielen --> because of the rain we couldn't play outside.

Tell me if you got that right, I'll explain better once I get my books dug up Wink

    Re: German Thread

Ok... Danke sehr! I'm such a geek, but I seriously was thinking "Cool! I get to learn some more prepositions!" when you said that Geeked

Akkusativ (thanks for the names btw Yes), isn't that just the direct object? At least, I think it is in English, I really don't pay attention in that boring class Big Smile So it would be "Ich habe einen blauen Ball," right? I couldn't think of anything with spielen that made sense, but if that's right, I think I get it...

I have to admit, I'm completely lost on Genitiv, but I can wait on it, I don't think it's going to interfere with my small amount of Grammatik LOL

    Re: German Thread

Yeah! That sentence was correct! Akkusativ also involves movement. That way you know that most verbs that involve moving from one place to another, or changing from one stage to another (laufen, schlafen, essen, gehen, etc) those verbs go with akkusativ. Verbs that don't involve movement (sein, werden, träumen, etc) are Dativ.

Honestly, I hardly use Genitiv. It is handy sometimes, but it can wait, you don't need to focus so much on it, but on the other 3 cause you'll be needing them more LOL

I'll help ya out with the präpositionen soon  =P

    Re: German Thread

So it's like the Action/whatever the second one is verb split in English between Dativ und Akkusitiv? I can remember that.

Well, if Genitiv doesn't have an English equivalent, big deal, I won't know what I'm missing LOL

Damn it I hate long words like that when I have to spell them I always complained about the length of preposition before but this is another level No LOL

    Re: German Thread

LMAO if you think the word präpositionen is long you haven't seen anything LOL. A couple long words for ya: Kundendienststelle, Kriegsberichterstatter, Gedankenlosigkeit. lol.

Well you'll still need to learn Genitiv, but I said I don't think there's an exact equivalent in english lol.

I'll learn it, but hell, I've only been learning for a few months, they don't teach preschoolers that stuff that early LOL

    Re: German Thread

Hey, you can just ignore this if I've already logged (meaning after 10ish), but I've got a test in German tomorrow, and I don't know any smack talk. Yeah, screw studying haha I want to cram more. Anyone know how to say something to, I don't know, express that I've taken harder tests in kindergarten (see? I did some of the work for you Rolling Eyes), and some kind of "Is that all you've got" kind of thing? I'll let you know if Herr Brunker comments LOL
