Great album, it is the disc playin' in the car currently. Recommend both of Jerry's solo albums for AIC and any music fans.  Especially like "Cut You In", kind of a fun video too, check it out.

Another favorite on this album is "Cold Piece". An interesting tune, especially lyrically, Jerry says alot here but then turns the tables on himself at the end of the song.  What Jerry does not say in interviews, he says through his songs.

My path to Boggy Depot was long, and not a very nice trip. In a nutshell, no pun intended, within the span of three months, a very good friend committed suicide, the man I loved decided to marry someone else, my house burned, causing me to lose my pets and 98% of my possessions, I lost my job, and my son's father continued to be a raging alcoholic. (My life was a bad country song!)

I had loved AiC since the first time I heard, "Man in the Box," however, I hadn't had much of an opportunity to explore Jerry's solo music. Following the fire, I had to make a list of all of the music I had lost... a massive and incomplete undertaking. A very dear friend of mine and fellow Alice fan, gifted me an entire Alice collection, leaving me free to get Jerry's solo CDs.

Grief, for me, was a monster. Grief makes you vulnerable, not just to the present, but also to the past. Having survived a traumatic experience in my past, I kept telling myself I was going to make it through. Easier said than done at times. It was beastly. Things you thought you had dealt with come back to haunt you in the dead of night.

You make decisions you don't want to make, you deal with people you don't want to deal with. You hate, you love, you hope, you despair. I did contemplate suicide. Then I got Boggy Depot. When I first heard "Hurt a Long Time," I felt like someone finally understood that you don't just "get over" something. You fight through it and that it was okay to acknowlege, "its going to hurt a long time."

Jerry wrote Boggy Depot 9 or 10 years before all of this happened, but it made no difference. Boggy Depot made me feel okay again. It gave me an outlet for my anger, sadness, indifference, pain, sarcasm, mistrust, betrayal, and what was left of my sense of humor. It was an acknowledgment of the darkness and I needed that. Everyone just wanted me to get over the grieving, for my friend, for my lost love, for my pets, for my lost sense of security. No one wanted to acknowledge I was drowning, but Boggy Depot did.

It saved me. It brought me back from an edge I thought I would never walk. I don't know what all Jerry had gone through to write the lyrics and the music, one can only assume, which is dangerous, but I'm very thankful he chose to share it. And I'm very thankful my life doesn't resemble a bad country song any more!

I was listening to this just this morning on the way to work. For the longest time I thought my brother and I were the only people on earth that loved this album.

Its good to know other people have great taste  

My favorite album of all time.  I started playing guitar because of this album.  The solo on Settling Down is so good that it almost makes me weep when I here it to this day.

This is an excellent effort from Jerry that is basically AIC without Layne. Sean Kinney plays all the drums, even though Mike Inez only plays bass on a few. This one is a bit easier to digest than Degradation Trip, not that I don't like DT, but the two are TOTALLY different. This HAD to be a hard time for Jerry, seeing as Alice was basically over at this point. His guitar work is always stellar, but I think he really hit a high point with his vocals on Boggy. Stand out tunes, for me, are My Song, Satisfy, Breaks My Back, and Between. Also, Cold Piece which, of course, is about Layne. This HAD to have caused some tension between Jerry and Layne. Rumors are that the relationship between these two was NOT good at the end. This was Jerry writing about the situation and, for fans, it was really an insight into what you were hearing about back then, with the drug situation and some REALLY outlandish rumors that were out there. All in all, a GREAT record!!

Inanna, I am so sorry for the trials that were put in front of you, what you said was so true, and I will remember to be more compassionate to others that are grieving. I think this a great album. When I hear it, it's like dejavu, like it seems so familiar, but different. I like all of the songs, but I love Jesus hands and Hurt a long time. My husband and I dated in '98 and '99, he needed to make some changes in his life and couldn't quite get them done, so I broke things off. I told him "someday someone is gonna thank God I came into their life, and you will be wishing to God you hadn't let me get away". We met up again in 2004 at a Chevelle concert, both single, and he swore he would never let me go again, and that when I was gone he would listen to the song "Hurt a long time" and it would remind him of me. So, it was my told you so song!

Ah...... Hurt a Long Time........ beautiful, beautiful song.  One of my all-time favorite songs.  Jerry's voice is painfully beautiful in this song.  I've heard several people on this board describe his voice as soothing, almost angelic and this is the perfect example of that.

Its a great solo album. I definitely see how it is an AIC album but without Layne. And I'd heard that apparently this would have been quite like the 4th album..if it was made.

When I first heard it, I enjoyed it, but it took me a few listens to fully appreciate this album. Its amazing.
