I saw them at Unholy Alliance a couple weeks back. They rock. Lamb of God and Children of Bodom are better tho :p

Y'see I'm a big metal fan but I don't paticlularly like the vocla styles of Lamb Of God or Bodom.

Musically they are hugely talented but a lot of the time the screamy vocal put's me off. It's a hard thing to be able to pull of but I just don't particularly like hearing it.

Mastodon actually have some chops melodically and they do odd time signatures which is why I like them...they're different.

Yeah I seem to have similar taste as you I heard some of LOG and Bodom and while impressed by the guitar work I was put off by the vocals.  I've had Levithan for awhile and actually was just listening to it.  New album coming out Sept. 12.

    Re: Mastodon

    Mastodon rocks so fucking hard!

I love those guys.. a lot more then LOG and COB, but that is neither here no there those guys are good at what they do i just enjoy mastodon's style a lot more.

    Love the angular guitar style.

they played a new song when i saw them on unholy alliance called circle of the sasquatch (or something like that) and it sounded awesome live, but on itunes i've previewd the first two songs from the album and.... i don't know about the vocals. It sounds like they are trying to sing..... i wish they woudl just do like they did on Leviathan or even Remission. I won't judge them too quickly though until i actually hear the album. I've really been looking forward to Blood Mountain

If you like mastodon you guys should check out high on fire if you have not already. It seems most people i turn on to mastodon love high on fire too.

    Mastodon rocks for sure!

I follow them on myspace, too bad they don't come to holland for the unholy alliance. Would like to see them play with lamb of god and slayer.

Now it's only slayer, in flames, children of bodom and thine eyes bleed (in Amsterdam lamb of god also). But i don't like In Flames and COB.

I have Blessed Black Winds by High on Fire and I like it OK but I do prefer actual singing and I am looking foward to the new Mastodon.  Also if you like Mastodon and HOF you'll probably like bands like Clutch and C.O.C.

Anyone picked up the new album Blood Mountain today? I am headed to best buy after work to pick it up. I am really excited. I have nto read a bad review of it. I've read some that say it is good but not as great as leviathan. the review on allmusic.com made it sound awesome Big Smile

    Re: Mastodon

I would actually say its even better than Leviathan.  I've listened too it non stop since I got it on Friday.  The guitar work is especially great on it.  I really like the vocal mix between the screams and the actual singing.  Just overall a really amazing album.  The Wolf is Loose, Sleeping Giant, Colony of Birchmen, just to name a few.  Some of the changes in the songs from on time signature to another will blow your mind.

    Re: Mastodon

I LOVE Mastodon!! They are totally heavy..love their musical style, very different to other 'metal' bands, more complicated and interesting in parts..

Love the songs: Blood and Thunder, I am Ahab, Iron Tusk, Naked Burn and Hearts Alive...What's the name of that album you gave me Richy?!Huh?

Yeah like I said I think its even better that Leviathan and I still haven't stopped listening to it.  If you can find it I suggest you get the 2 disk version because the 2nd disk is a DVD with the making of Blood Mountain video on it and a live video of Capillarian Crest.

Anyone else seen the video for The Wolf is Loose?  Easily their best video yet of course the pics of Colony of Birchman look cool and its supposed to contain the narrative elements of the album.

Blood Mountain is one fine album alright..I love the different beats through it..doesn't sound like a 'typical' metal album..

And I'm gonna see them play support for Tool next month..I'm one happy girl!!Mr Green
