    Opeth

So join me, if you will, and discuss the almighty OPETH, who are probably the most brilliant metal band to have graced the music scene in the past 10-15 years. I think I can honestly say that with eight studio albums (and a ninth fast approaching), Opeth has not released even one bad song in their entire career. And on top of that, they haven't had one album that is anything less than a masterpiece.

There are maybe 5 people in the modern music world that I would be so bold as to call a genius. Mikael Akerfeldt is one of them. The way he composes songs is almost beyond comprehension.

*awaits Richey, who is probably the only person here awesome enough to like Opeth*

    ...

*though I hope there are more*

    Re: Opeth

Yeah it's a shame that Martin Lopez had to leave the band due to health problems. He was great. And of course Lindgren just recently left. That was kind of a shocker, but it doesn't really worry me. Not to be unfair to the other bandmembers, but Akerfeldt has clearly always been the mastermind of Opeth, and as long as he's there, there shouldn't be a problem.

Props to that bloke Richy for hooking you up.

    Re: Opeth

Anyone that hears this band and can't appreciate them is completly musically retarded.

With bands like Godsmack and the like around...this band pisses all over them.

I agree with what you say bout Mikael but Martin and Lindgren will be a big loss....It'll be interesting to see what they sound like on the new album to be honest.Martin is a big part of Opeth's sound and will be sorely missed, but I'm confident of another great album!

A little funny sidenote, when Opeth played here last year, some of my friends met some of them in a pub and were drinking and playing foosball with them! LOL

They seem like nice guys and their Lamentations DVD is my favourite music DVD!

Also, don't be put off by the voals people, because I used to be...but listen to a song like Deliverence or Ghost Of Perdition and you'll see and hopefully come around to that styel, because thats what did it for me!

Yeah, they seem like a great group of guys. Akerfeldt's inter-song banter is pretty comical (second to Pete Steele of course). Stick out tongue Lamentations is indeed great, especially for newcomers, because it really gives a great depiction of both sides of the band. And yeah, Opeth pretty much turned me on to death vox as well, which I'd always thought would be impossible.

Yeah same here, the whole screamy shite still puts me off some stuff...but these guys do it so well its hard to just dismiss them as another shitty death metal band!

One of my son's friends (16 yrs old) recently had Opeth's "O" tattooed on his upper arm. It's beautiful. All of teenagers they hang out with love Opeth. I like them, but am not overly crazy for the vocals.... just my opinion. But I love that they have a lot of melodic sound to their metal.

I dig their Damnation, but that's probably all - a friend tried to convert me to a fan, but didn't succeed. Damn. is one of my fave albums though

Damnation is great. It's their least greatest album overall, but still great. It's only a start...you have to keep going from there.

Being that I love many different types of rock / metal bands, I will gladly say that I also love Opeth... c'mon Riffie, if you think about it I'm sure you might have guessed this since (I think) you know I love Meshuggah!  The only album I have is Blackwater Park but coincidentally I've been thinking of checking out Damnation lately... guess I'll get to it then eh?

Well, for someone like you, I'd probably say to get any album other than Damnation next. It's a great album, but it's more in the PinkFloyd/Camel/NickDrake vein, and not really metal like the other albums. I'd say get Still Life next. But yeah, eventually you do want to get Damnation.

    And everything else they've released.

You have to. Just bear in mind, even if you don't care for death vocals, the songs are worth listening to even just for the clean-vox and acoustic sections, which appear in well over 50% of their songs.

And seriously, Orchid came on my random shuffle the other night. That album...is so....good. Undoubtedly one of the greatest metal debuts ever. Just shows that they really left hardly any room for improvement....they were incredible right from the start.

    Re: Opeth

Yeah! Opeth! I hope they get really big some day like Dethklok or something (if you watch Metalocalypse). I only have Ghost Reveries and I love it. The only death metal band that I like is Opeth unless you count Slayer.

I was thinking I'd get Blackwater Park next. Good idea? Bad idea? Not really an idea, just a decision?
